This site does a really good job of explaining how to wire the NS-2 noise gate, including use of its loop in "X pattern," which, I'm embarrassed to say, is something I never knew about until yesterday. So this is a little technical for me, and I fear it will be a long post, but I hope you guys can please help me out! I have two questions. In either case it's imperative you experiment because intuition in these circumstances is often wrong. However, if you aren't worried about the noise and want to increase the ambient effects (cable 4), then you could run the compressor there, though my understanding is this is quite unconventional in guitar rigs even though pop producers do this to mixdowns all the time. My intuition is the same as /u/thebeengrim, that you should add it after the superoverdrive in the diagram. This cabling has the added bonus of still allowing you to drive the amp with your drive/boost pedal (think ts, klon, etc).Ĭompression increases the effect of the chain before it. In this case, you also want the noise of the preamp and pedal chain attenuated along with your noisy guitar. This can be quite a problem, especially if you have a lot of noisy pedals. In this case, as you raise the gain, you also raise the noise floor, and because the preamp is clipping (on purpose), it doesn't sound as "loud" in relation to the noise. If you're using the inamp distortion however, the gain on the amp will be used to drive the distortion. I think your amp falls into this category. On high headroom amps this is not usually a problem, as the headroom is very large compared noise. However, every guitar preamp also has its own internal noise. With the standard send-return setup, you're eliminating the nose from the guitar. The only reason to use this configuration is if you have a lot of noise from the preamp. I don't think that's the best practice for your situation. List of recommended Youtube gear channels!
